TYNNERED, GOTHENBURG

Young people have repeatedly expressed the need for increased safety in the area. People’s interest in issues of democracy has increased since it was decided that the school in Tynnered would be closed.

The Tynnered residential area is located barely 20 kilometres south of central Gothenburg. There is a much involvement in democracy issues among the active young people who use the Tyrolen Recreation Centre as their base.

Surrounded by woodlands and traffic-free areas, the multi-dwelling units of Tynnered were built in the late 1960s. Although the area will change in the long term, the young people want to act now.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

There are ongoing discussions on how art and artists in collaboration with local young people can find new ways to highlight topical issues. Throughout the spring of 2017, artist Aleksandra Stratimirovic has worked together with the project group at the Tyrolen Recreation Centre. After the summer she will present a sketch for a permanent work. The work will comprise, in different ways, light and texts written the young people.

WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE?

How can influence and power be built on from below? How can art and art forms such as poetry, dance and music support and strengthen the power of democratic work in situ?

These issues were raised by the young people in the project group at Tyrolen’s Recreation Centre at the beginning of the project Art is Happening. They also describe that their purposeful work is often met with a pat on the head. Artist Aleksandra Stratimirovic has been tasked with working with the locations defined by the young people, both in relation to the surrounding community and to their own visions and ideas about the hub in the inner space of the Recreation Centre. In April 2017, in collaboration with the project team and visitors, Stratimirovic conducted a workshop with light experiments. Light will appear on the approach, entrance and interior of Tyrolen.
