The National Public Art Council Sweden

The National Public Art Council was founded in 1937 and is responsible to the Ministry of Culture.

The primary goal of the National Public Art Council is that art should be a natural and prominent aspect of our social environment.

The National Public Art Council seeks to ensure that all forms of contemporary artistic expression are reflected in society by means of artistic decoration of public buildings and the collections of art that are put together on behalf of government bodies.

By means of information, education and development in the field of public artistic expression the Council furthers an understanding of the importance of art in creating a positive social environment.

The Council seeks to ensure that contemporary art plays a prominent role in society and to create opportunities for positive encounters between art and the citizen.

Diversity is an important factor in the Council's activities and professional artists in Sweden have the opportunity each year of presenting their work to the Council's project managers by submitting portfolios. Meetings are held in various parts of the country.

An extensive program for the development of art-educational methodology has been undertaken with a view to creating dialogue concerning the role of art in the public domain.

In its collaboration with non-governmental bodies, the National Public Art Council gives priority to projects concerned with children and young people and their environments with a focus on the participation of youngsters in meeting art.
