History

Statens konstråd - The Swedish National Public Art Council - was founded in 1937 with the ambition, which remains in force - that the artistic treatment of buildings housing government activities, together with collections of art, should contribute to ensuring creative and attractive environments for employees and for the public.

The artistic treatments resulting from commissions will provide a unique cultural heritage to coming generations and give opportunities to enjoy art in the public domain throughout the country.

The brief of the National Public Art Council was extended in 1997 to include joint commissions with non-government parties including local government and private developers.

Collaboration that affects the environments in which children and young people operate are given priority in accordance with the council’s brief and there has been a focus in recent years on joint projects for school premises.
